General Information

INTRODUCTION

The National Institute of Education (NIE) , Sri Lanka is the prime institute in the country responsible for providing leadership for the development of general education with.
  • design and develop curricula for general and teacher education.
  • provide professional development of educational community.
  • spearhead change through research and innovation.

ESTABLISHMENT

The National Institute of Education (NIE), Sri Lanka was established in 1986 under the provisions ofthe National Institute of Education Act No. 28 of 1985 and commenced operations at No. 255, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07. The main purpose of creating the NIE was to establish a unique institute for capacity building of educational managers, teacher educators and teachers, design and develop school curricula and conduct policy research on education. The NIE was mandated to advise the Minister on matters related to the development of education in Sri Lanka. The objectives of the Institute, as given in the above Act are as follows:
  • Advise the Minister regarding plans, programmes and activities for the development of education in Sri Lanka.
  • Provide and promote postgraduate education in the several specialties of education
  • Conduct and promote studies on the education system including its performance, goals, structures, content and methodology and on the social, economic and other aspects of education.
  • Initiate and promote innovative practices in the education system, including adaptation of technology for educational purposes.
  • Provide for the development of professional and general competence of personnel in the education system.
  • Make available to the Government and other approved organizations, specialist services in education.
  • Carry out education development programmes approved by the Minister.
  • Co-ordinate with other institutions having similar objectives.

CORPORATE OBJECTIVES

  • Assuring quality education through a balanced curriculum for the development of productive citizens competent to face local and global demands.
  • Capacity building of professionals to provide leadership in educational development.
  • Ensuring a scientific information base to facilitate policy making and improve practice in education.
  • Supporting total educational improvement through utilization of modern technologies
  • Promote economic, social and cultural development through innovative participatory approaches in the education system.
  • Develop the NIE as an educational friendly institute for administration and development
  • Develop child friendly, teacher friendly schools where democracy and human values are perpetuated and sustained.
  • To achieve the above objectives and ensure efficient functioning of the institute, the structure of the Institute has been reorganized. under the reorganization, four faculties have been established for the academic functions and two divisions for planning, research and administration functions. There is a Secretariat and an Advisory Board to the Director General under whom the Examinations Unit and Internal Audit Unit directly function.

    CORPORATE VALUES

    The NIE as a corporate body advocates professional collegiality and cohesiveness and endeavors to inculcate a sense of belongingness in all its members leading to self motivation and satisfaction by recognizing and respecting individual talents and achievements. Every member of the organization is accorded just, fair and equitable treatment and individual initiative is promoted encouraging self-development. In return a high degree of self-discipline and loyalty to the institute is expected of its members along with serious concern for responsibility and accountability, both individual and collective. Participatory approaches and pro-active planning are encouraged to facilitate adaptability to change. Demonstrable transparency is considered to be of utmost importance. Concern for the image of the institute by all members at all times is emphasized. Positive and critical examination and the adoption of constructive approaches for organizational development are always encouraged. The NIE is a public corporation and therefore relies on purposeful, planned and continuous public relation approaches to maintain close links with the public. At the same time, attempts are made to develop strong external linkages in order to gain wider recognition and keep pace with contemporary global developments. Continuous improvement through reflective practices will remain a major concern of the Institute. In addition to being a public corporation the NIE is a competing agent in the education enterprise and is therefore concerned with the production of marketable products and marketing. In this respect, it is very much concerned with high quality and competitiveness in its products and services. The goals implicit in the mission statement are elaborated in the following corporate level and operational level objectives.
