Main tasks and Functions of the Department


Designing following curriculum materials in every subject.

Preparation of relevant syllabus.

Preparation of Teachers Instructional Manual.

Preparation of Resource books for students.

Conducting awareness programme for Education officers in the system.

Developing capacity of subject Directors; ISAA and mentors to facilitate learning and teaching.

Monitoring the implementation of new curriculum at School level.

Popularizing the subject and new approaches for learning & teaching


Practical and Technical Skill Project


Commencing at Grade 6 in the form of Practical and Technical Skills (PTS), which is compulsory up to Grade 9. The PTS is newly designed subject as suggested in the recent General Education Reforms and is considered to be one of the innovative changes in our school system.

The main feature of PTS is to provide students of Grades 6 to 9 with an opportunity to engage in technological and Practical activities that promote creativity in an area of interest to the students.

Practical and Technical Sills (PTS) brings together activities in the following technical areas.


Agriculture

Food

Elementary Technology

Graphics

Business Matters


In addition, this subject provide students, opportunities to gain basic skills in ICT relevant to the above five technical areas.

The PTS Project is entrusted with the conceptualization and designing and developing of the Practical and Technical Skills curriculum at secondary level. The key activities covered under this programme are identification of methodologies and resource, Preparation of action plans, design and developing curriculum and assessment materials, training of trainers, designing in-service train programme and monitoring pilot programme. In adifition to the above the project in presently involved in collaboration with the Education publication Development in the design & develop text books for the all the grades of 6 to 9.


Objectives


To grasp practical skills extended throughout the five wide technical areas.

To select and use equipment and material relevant to the tasks when engaged in practical and technical activities.

To collect and arrange information meaningfully, connected to rapidly evolving technology.

To develop desirable work habits and behaviours for progress of day to day life.

To attempt new inventions in a productive manner based on confidence developed through self-reliance.

To complete a project systematically integrating skills and experiences acquired through different activities.


Agriculture & Food Science


To provide a scientific and technical meaning in a sound way to traditional agriculture.

To use environmental resources in a sustainable way.

To develop scientific and practical skills connected with animal husbandry.

To adopt suitable technology in the preservation of agriculture and animal product in order to minimize the losses of harvest that may occur otherwise.

To develop socio-economics development in the country by attracting the youth to national agriculture development.


Fisheries and food Technology


Objectives


To understand the extent and the diversity of the aquatic resources of Sri Lanka.

To assure the Sustainability of the aquatic resources and the aquatic eco-systems.

To reduce the wastage of fishery resources using suitable preservation and handling methods.

To upgrade the nutritional and Social Status of the people.

To contribute the national economical development through fishery.

To contribute to the community development of Fishermen.


Design & Technology


Objectives


To provide opportunities to identify and analyze a problem or situation in order to give solutions.

To generate the alternative solutions for the identified problem

To use appropriate technologies for Design.

To use appropriate tools & equipment safely and correctly for product development.

To use range of materials economically for product fabrication.

To manage the resources in the design process.

To evaluate the product.

To communicate clearly to introduce a novel idea by means of graphically verbally and as written report.

To develop, creativity, Problem-solving skills, Higher order thinking skills, Decision making skills, Entrepreneurship skills and communication skills.


Arts & Craft


Objectives


To engender a sense of pride about a great history and the noble pattern of living througn the study of Sri Lankan folk art.

To instil creative thinking based on the Knowledge of traditional arts.

To obtain correct shapes for creatine works using geometrical drowing

To give orientation for artistic creations according to current needs.

To pave way for future entrepreneurship to triumph in the world of work through the competency in art and craft.


Home Economics


Objectives


To build up self confidence and self-esteem in students through developing skills in applying practical and problem solving techniques relevant to different areas of Home Management .

To develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes for healthy nutritional habits to take responsibilities regarding sound nutrition and wellbeing.

To make aware the opportunities linked to Home Economics.

To develop personal and social skills by inculcate in to favorable attitudes and morality.


Technology Stream


Objectives


To develop technological skills for day to day life.

To develop skills to provide technical solutions for the problems in the world of work.

To develop job based skills.

To provide opportunities to reach the system through connecting technical education with National Qualification Framework .
